Andy Murray heads to the Miami Open after a trip to his favorite getaway, the hotel he owns in Scotland.
The No. 2-ranked tennis player in the world, Andy Murray, looks forward to playing in the Miami Open for many reasons, but one is personal. Murray and wife, Kim Sears — who welcomed baby daughter, Sophia, this past February — have a place in Miami, so he can feel like he’s at a “home base” when he takes to the courts in Key Biscayne. The Open takes place over two weeks, March 21 to April 3. When not traveling around the world 40 weeks out of the year, he takes every opportunity to visit the hotel he owns outside of his hometown of Dunblane, Scotland — the Cromlix House.
“Our daughter had been born only a few weeks early, so we decided to take a couple of days so she could meet all of her family. My parents and grandparents still live in the area, but we don’t like to burden them, so we stay at my hotel.”
The 28-year-old Murray bought the luxurious country retreat — where his brother, tennis star Jamie Murray was married and his grandparents celebrated their silver wedding anniversary — in February 2013. “The restaurant is run by the world-renowned chef, Albert Roux; so for people like us, who like good food, it’s always a joy to stay there,” he says. “The fact that a lot of family still live in Dunblane is the perfect excuse to visit. Whether it’s visiting Gran to sample some of her shortbread or taking a walk around the cathedral where my wife and I married, it always brings back special memories.”
So what does the tennis pro never leave home without when he travels?
“I’m a huge fan of Ed Sheeran. His last few albums have been firmly in my ‘most played’ playlist for a while. Also, British band, Bastille.”
“One of the most important items I take with me everywhere is my MACBOOK PRO. I’m into fantasy sports and in quite a few leagues across a few sports; so I’m always tinkering away with my team, making transfers, and researching new players. It’s serious business!”
“I really enjoy music, so Beats by Dr. Dre SOLO 2 headphones are the perfect thing to block out of the drone of the airplane engines when I’m flying around.”
“My tennis rackets travel with me. I use the HEAD Graphene Radical pro. I’ve used HEAD for many years, and their development of my racket has been incredible. In the latest version, there’s revolutionary Graphene XT technology, which allows an even better distribution of weight from the shaft to the tip and grip, resulting in more power and improved energy transfer for a faster game.”
“My partners Under Armour have customized my kit so that it has my personal logo on the shirt and shoes, which is a nice touch. I currently wear custom versions of the Raid training shirt and shorts. “
“We play in some incredibly hot places throughout the season. I’m quite fair skinned at the best of times, so it’s even more important for someone like me to protect myself.”
“Being on the road all the time makes it difficult to see friends and family. I use FaceTime quite a lot on my iPhone 6, which is more personal and puts a face to a voice.”
