Michael Bastian’s style travels with him.
It’s been 10 years since Michael Bastian started his own brand, a line he became inspired to create while he was men’s fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman. His menswear was recently described by GQ as “sexy, classic American with European-inflected fits and fabrics.” While it’s designed in New York, its Euro-flair comes from its made-in-Italy status.
Bastian’s Spring/Summer 2015 line celebrates the Arizona desert — yet his wanderlust has him dreaming of a pleasure trip to the Amangiri resort, a luxury retreat set on 600 acres in Southern Utah. “I love visiting the desert southwest and this place seems so peaceful and remote.”
He confides that a friend was talking about the resort at a dinner party and “the whole place stopped dead — it just sounds incredible.” A global traveler, it’s safe to say that it’s Utah he’s set his sights on for a trip that he says would be for “pure pleasure.” So what are the must-haves Bastian packs in his travel bag?
“I’m having an L.A. moment right now. I’m listening to a lot of Miguel and Lola Wolf.”
“I have a big canvas tote bag that’s my carry on. I bought it at the Paris Hérmes in the early 2000s. The style has been discontinued, so mine is pretty beat up — but I like it that way.” Vintage Hérmes Sac de Voyage Canvas and Leather Bag.
“For fragrance I only wear Dior Eau Sauvage when it’s hot and Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum in colder months.”
“Right now I’m reading 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do by Amy Morin.” It’s a good book for polishing up your leadership skills and conquering needless anxiety.
“It’s important to keep your keys, coins, watch and other stuff that’s in your pocket in one place in the hotel room — it’s the first thing I do when I get into a room and it keeps me slightly organized.” Hérmes felt tray.
“If I’m going away for more than a week, I squeeze a yoga mat in my luggage, mainly so I can do sit ups in the hotel room.” The Mat by LULULEMON.
“I never go anywhere without packing a good pair of jeans, a blue and white striped button-down shirt, and a navy cashmere crewneck sweater. Workhorses of a wardrobe, they can be dressed up or down and always look good.” MICHAEL BASTIAN COLLECTION.
“I think it’s impossible to program hotel alarm clocks and I don’t like wake-up calls, so this perfectly designed clock goes with me everywhere.” CASIO Travel Alarm Clock.
“A must for long flights.” Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones.
“Tough, well made, and good looking… I travel a lot and it’s the one bag that can keep up with me.” Rolling Thunder 30-inch Bag by North Face.
